Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) is a persistent organic pollutant known to induce diverse molecular and behavioral alterations. Effects of PCB exposure could be transmitted to future generations via changes in behavior and gene expression. Previous work has shown that PCB-exposure can alter social behavior. The present study extends this work by examining a possible molecular mechanism for these changes. Pregnant rats (Sprague-Dawley) were exposed through diet to a combination of non-coplanar (PCB 47-2,2 0 ,4,4 0-tetrachlorobiphenyl) and coplanar (PCB 77-3,3 0 ,4,4 0-tetrachlorobiphenyl) congeners. Maternal care behaviors were examined by evaluating the rate and quality of nest building on the last 4 d of gestation and dam/pup interactions on postnatal days 1, 2, 4 and 6. On postnatal day 17, dams were euthanized and hypothalamic tissue was removed for expression analyses of the oxytocin receptor (OXTR) and cytochrome P450 …

Expression of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) Receptor Gene in the Ovary of a Prenatally-Androgenized Rat Model of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Following Androgen Exposure in the Prenatal Period

Introduction: Based on available evidence, exposure of the female fetus to androgens during the prenatal period, by affecting the expression of some genes, can cause polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in adulthood. On the other hand, changes in luteinizing hormone (LH) levels and its receptor are associated with the risk of reproductive disorders, including PCOS. The present study aimed to evalua...

Oxytocin improves autistic-like behaviors induced by maternal deprivation in female rats

Background and Objective: Maternal deprivation as an early life negative experience can lead to enduring disorders such as autism-like behaviors by affecting brain development. Oxytocinergic system alters in the process of maternal deprivation, on the other hand the positive effect of oxytocin on the improvement of social behavior and stereotyped behavior in autism disorder has been shown. In t...

Examination of the immunohistochemical localization and gene expression by RT-PCR of the oxytocin receptor in diabetic and non-diabetic mouse testis

Objective(s): The aim of this study was to determine Oxytocin receptor (OTR) gene expression and localization in diabetic and non-diabetic mouse testes by RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry, respectively. Materials and Methods: In this study, 18 male BALB/c mice (8–12 weeks old) were used and divided into three groups: diabetic, sham, and control. Streptozotocin (STZ) was applied to the diabetic g...

The Effect of Swimming Endurance Exercise on Cell Death and Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Gene Expression in Brain of Rat: An Experimental Study of Alzheimer's Disease Model

Background and Objectives: Alzheimerchr('39')s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease which is marked by impaired cholinergic function and decreased nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChRs) density. nAChRs are important mediators of cholinergic signaling in modulation of learning and memory function. In Alzheimer hippocampus is particularly vulnerable to specific degenerative processes an...

Maternal exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls and the secondary sex ratio: an occupational cohort study

BACKGROUND Though commercial production of polychlorinated biphenyls was banned in the United States in 1977, exposure continues due to their environmental persistence. Several studies have examined the association between environmental polychlorinated biphenyl exposure and modulations of the secondary sex ratio, with conflicting results. OBJECTIVE Our objective was to evaluate the associatio...
